Chhath Puja: Chhath Dala Chhath is also known as an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Surya, the Hindu sun god. It is also known as Surya Shashti. Chhath Puja is performed to thank Surya for life on earth and to request the granting of certain desires. The Sun, considered the god of energy and life force, is worshiped during the Chhath fesival to promote well-being, prosperity and progress.

The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. They include bath holy, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Vratta) standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prasad (offerings of prayer) and Aragh at sunset and increase.

Although there is much detail in Bihar, Jharkhand and in the Terai region of Nepal in modern times, and is more common in areas where migrants from these regions have a presence, it is celebrated in all regions and major cities in India.

Chhath Puja is performed on Kartik Shukala Shashti, which is the sixth day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar, just six days after Deepawali.
